Ray Barnes By Ray Barnes

Why Car Lockouts Happen.

  • You leave the key fob inside the vehicle and the doors auto-lock
  • You manually lock the doors from inside and close them
  • The boot locks with the fob still inside
  • You drop your keys in the car while unloading, and shut the door

Sound familiar? You’re not alone I’ve help people locked out of their vehicles

A Quick Fix You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Most car keys come with a hidden key blade inside the fob a manual key that can open your door even if the electronic part is locked in the vehicle.

Here’s the trick that could save you being locked out of your vehicle

Keep that key blade in your purse, wallet, or separate keyring, not inside the fob or with your main keys.

That way, even if you accidentally lock your fob in the car, you’ll still have a way in. It’s small, light, and could save you a big headache (and a callout fee).

How to Access Your Hidden Key Blade

Most key fobs have a small latch or button that releases the manual key blade:

  1. Look for a release catch on the side or back of the fob
  2. Slide or press it to remove the blade
  3. Use it like a regular key in the door lock (which may be hidden behind a plastic cap)

Not sure how yours works? A quick Google search of your car’s make + “hidden key blade” will usually bring up instructions or ask your dealer next time you’re in.
